SoHome Horror Pride has begun, and it will run until July 21st. The festival offers many fantastic films and events each year, and this year is no different. All you need to access the festival is a stable internet connection, and the terrific offerings will be open to anybody that wishes to participate. Participants can join at any time across the weekend, and catch up in no time.
As a taster, here are 6 items worth tuning into this year's SoHome Horror Pride for.
1. Cannibal Mukbang
Across the festival circuit, Aimee Kuge's debut feature has garnered acclaim for being a raucous and bold mixture of horror, comedy, romance, and gore. The story sees the shy Mark becoming smitten with the outgoing Ash, and becoming surprised that she reciprocates that attraction. But as his feelings intensify, Mark unexpectedly becomes submersed into Ash's biggest love; the wild world of mukbanging. And, with it, lots of bloodshed.
Available Friday 19th from 8pm
2. Final Ghouls
Since its birth in 2020, Ghouls Magazine offered intelligent and nuanced takes on the horror genre from a female identifying and non-binary perspective. Such dissections were available courtesy of numerous articles, essays, panels, and podcasts, but all good things must end, and in April 2024, Ghouls Magazine took an indefinite hiatus. Across three panels on the same evening, a celebration will be held as we salute the fantastic Ghouls Magazine.
Available live on Friday 19th from 6:15pm
3. House of Izabel
At Casa Izabel, a group of male-presenting individuals are granted a temporary escape from their day-to-day lives, and can become the glamourous women they desire to be. At the isolated estate, they don wigs, make-up, gowns, and aliases to live openly for their short stay — tossing back champagne, dancing, and even hunting wild boar in their pumps. But in this cinematically bold and pulpy period melodrama, their carefree feminine fantasy is interrupted when the harsh realities of life under Brazil’s military dictatorship threaten to expose dangerous secrets and destroy the beloved Casa Izabel.
Available Saturday 20th from 1:20pm
4. I Am Monsters!
Back in 2020, the inaugural SoHome Horror Pride brought the world the first filmed depiction of Nicolas Vince's astounding autobiographical show. The digital festival now comes full circle by showing the entre film version of Vince's one-man show, as the creative talks about the experiences which led to the creation of Hellraiser's The Chatterer, and the times where he felt like a monster. A coming-of-age and coming out tale shared by an engaging storyteller.
Available Sunday 21st from 10:30am
5. Saint Drogo
The team behind cult favourite Death Drop Gorgeous return with a different leviathan entirely, with this ethereal and horny slice of queer folk horror. The story sees a disconnected couple trying to rekindle their relationship by taking an impromptu trip to Provincetown, Massachusetts during the offseason. Caleb, one half of the couple, becomes worried about an ex who had been working in the town for the summer but seems to have gone missing. As nightmares plague Caleb, he becomes more steadfast in his search, but the more he persists, the closer he nears an unspeakable horror lurking in the town. A film that lures you in with its rural beauty before gnawing your throat out.
Available Sunday 21st from 12:30pm
6. T-Shockers: A Short Film Showcase of Trans Excellence
Start off your Saturday with a fantastic showcase of short films showcasing Trans excellence from across the world. The Estrogen Gospel follows a young transgender woman on a hike through the English countryside to try resolving her spiritual crisis, although an ancient evil intends that she never completes her journey. Glory, Hole follows two gay men (one cis and one trans) clashing at a nightclub glory hole, when one tries castrating the man that he believes raped him. A Body Transgressive is a love-letter to Frankenstein's monster, using Mary Shelley's iconic creature to explore subversive existence. Papergirl offers gender dysphoria through a metamorphosis as a lonely partygoer discovers their skin is turning to paper. Rounding off this assortment is Smooth, as a trans woman spirals into a dysphoric limbo when she is rejected for being too hairy.
Available Saturday 20th from 10am
The events will be hosted on a private Facebook group (an invite to which will be sent to you upon purchasing a festival pass). If you do not have a Facebook account to access the group with, screening links will be emailed to attendees as they go live, and will be accessible until Saturday July 27th.
